Hagen U1 Filter Foam. The Fluval 1 Foam Pad is designed to remove large particles from the aquarium but it also becomes a biological filter over time.
Helpful hint:
Because we do not want to destroy the beneficial bacteria that inhabit the foam pad, when we clean it the following cleaning methods are recommended:
- Cut the sponge in half and only clean one side at a time, thereby preserving a dense thriving colony of bacteria that will re-colonize the clean side shortly.
- Rinse the sponge in tank water, not tap water, that has been removed to a small container suitable to clean out the sponge in.
