Pure calcium for reptiles illuminated with UVB.
NEKTON-Rep-Calcium-Pur/Pur+ is a super effective calcium supplement that doesn't have vitamin D3. It helps prevent calcium deficiency and the problems that come with it, like rickets, deformities, and weak turtle shells. It's great for reptiles and amphibians because it supports healthy bone development and keeps their calcium levels in check.
NEKTON-Rep-Calcium-Pur/Pur+ is specially made for animals that get enough UVB light in their terrarium or those that spend plenty of time in the sun (around 10 hours). These animals can make their own vitamin D, so they don't need extra vitamin D3 in their supplement. If that's not the case, we recommend our NEKTON-Rep Calcium+D3 instead.
Calcium is very important for animals. It helps make strong eggshells, bones, and even aids in muscle contractions. But the calcium in their regular food is usually not enough. This is especially true for insects they eat, so it's important to give them extra calcium. Even if they live in a terrarium, they still need that extra calcium because they get more in the wild. Female animals and young ones, in particular, need more calcium to stay healthy.
Reptiles and amphibians need vitamin D in order to properly use calcium in their bodies. If these animals get enough of the right kind of UVB radiation, there's no need to give them extra vitamin D through their food. When these animals are healthy and get enough UVB radiation, they usually don't have a vitamin D deficiency. The vitamin precursors they get from their food (mostly from plants, animal muscles, and fat) are converted into a form of vitamin D3 in their skin when they're exposed to sunlight or UVB radiation and warmth. Then, in their kidneys, it becomes the active form of vitamin D3.
The amount of UVB radiation (how strong and how long) they need depends on the species of the animal. For example, desert-dwelling species need a lot more UVB radiation.
If these animals don't get enough calcium, they often try to make up for it by eating things like substrate, which can cause serious constipation. That's why the calcium shouldn't be in the substrate. Calcium sand and bird sand are not good choices for the terrarium. To make sure they're getting enough calcium, it's important to regularly give them a calcium supplement with their food.
Nekton-Rep-Calcium-Pur+ is the same as Pur, but with added trace minerals. Eventually, Pur+ will replace Pur.
