Overview

Brightwell Aquatics Lugol's is a powerful iodine/iodide solution that increases the iodine concentration in marine aquariums and reefs. It can also be used as a dip for new corals and is intended for advanced aquarists only.

Technical Background

Lugol's is a potent iodine solution used to dose iodine and create dips for corals and their allies. Iodine is crucial for hermatypic invertebrates like corals and clams, as it helps detoxify excess oxygen produced by zooxanthellae, reducing tissue irritation. Iodine (as iodide ion) binds with oxygen to form non-toxic iodate, allowing corals and clams to open fully.

Seawater naturally contains iodide at about 0.06 ppm. This minor element is essential for the survival of fishes, crustaceans, macroalgae, kelp, and hermatypic invertebrates. Iodine binds rapidly with organic material and is removed by protein skimming and organic-adsorption products, necessitating regular monitoring and supplementation based on the aquarium's stocking density, lighting, and other conditions. Proper dosing can be calculated once the iodine uptake rate is determined.

Instructions and Guidelines for Aquarium Use

Lugol's is available in two strengths due to regulatory changes. Refer to your label for the specific strength. Measure the iodine concentration in the aquarium using an accurate test kit before supplementing. Each ml of Lugol’s increases iodine concentration in 1 US-gallon (3.785 L) by 12 ppm, or approximately 0.6 ppm per drop. Use the formula: tank capacity in gallons x ppm increase desired x 0.07570 = ml of product to add. For example, to raise the iodine concentration in a 100-gallon aquarium by 0.02 ppm, the calculation is: 100 x 0.02 x 0.07570 = 0.15 ml (3 drops).

Instructions and Guidelines for Coral Dip

Lugol's strength may vary, so check your label. Draw one gallon of aquarium water and use the formula: 14.4 divided by the ppm per gallon on the label = ml to add to one gallon of tank water. For example, if Lugol's increases 1 US gallon by 12 ppm, the calculation is: 14.4 / 12 = 1.2 ml (1 dropperful plus 20% of another dropperful, or 1 dropperful plus 4 drops). Soak corals for 10 to 12 minutes and set a timer.
