Unlike ordinary biomedia, Matrix is an inorganic solid with a diameter of about 10 mm and a porous structure. This unique structure provides both external and internal macroporous surface area.

What sets Matrix apart is its impressive surface area. Each liter of Matrix provides a surface area of over 700 m2, equivalent to the surface area provided by 170 liters of plastic balls! While plastic bio-materials only provide external surface area, Matrix goes a step further by providing internal surface area as well.

The macropores in Matrix are ideally sized to support nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria. This unique feature allows Matrix to remove not just ammonia and nitrite, but also nitrate, all simultaneously and within the same filter.
