The intake tube and hose work together to draw out used water while lifting waste from between substrate pieces, allowing the gravel to settle back to the bottom of the aquarium.

A built-in priming bulb offers an alternative way to begin the siphon, alongside a manual start using a gentle vertical motion of the intake tube.
