Arcata Pet Supplies is located in the heart of the Redwood Forest. Locals jokingly refer to our location as “living behind the Redwood Curtain”. Being so far North and along the coast, we experience wet winters and foggy summers but we think it is a good trade off for a more relaxed way of life. The town of Arcata is a community of 15,000 residents at the north end of Humboldt Bay on California's north coast and is also home of Humboldt State University.

The store first opened in 1972 under the name of Arcata Aquarium. It was a small aquarium store. The current owners, Don and Joy, were two of that store's first employees. In 1976 Don and Joy took over the business and added a few products for other animals to the shop’s inventory. As the store evolved, small animals and birds were soon added as was the name Arcata Pet.
In 1984 we were one of the first retail pet stores to stop selling and supporting the wild bird trade. We maintained our own breeding collection of Blue and Gold Macaws, Amazon Parrots, African Greys, Cockatoos and Caiques in our store. As we have become more supply oriented, our breeding stock has been sold or sent to live their lives out in retirement with our employees.
In 1997 we took the giant step of putting Arcata Pet on the Internet. We were not sure how well this would do, but now the Internet is a significant part of our overall business. Being located in a small town, we take pride in offering our customers the same small town pet store service that our local customers have come to appreciate and expect. Many of our local customers have been shopping with us since we started as a small fish and aquarium store so many years ago, making them part of the Arcata Pet family. We hope that you, our online customers, will join our family.
As we are a real pet store, we have real people running the show and thought you would like to meet the staff at Arcata Pet:

Meet the staff
 | Dan - General Manager. Dan has been with Arcata Pet since May of 1989 having moved to Arcata to attend Humboldt State University, where he earned his degree in Environmental Biology. Dan has always had a real interest in birds and has been a Falconer since 1983. He maintains a large flock of exhibition poultry, exotic waterfowl as well as four African Grey Parrots. In addition to all these birds, Dan and his partner share their home with 3 dogs, Mattie the Beagle, Oso the Great Pyrenees, Myrah the Vizsla and the Evil Cat, Lichen.

Chris K.- Internet Manager. Having relocated to Humboldt County with his wife and two daughters from Bakersfield, CA. Chris became our Internet Manager in 2003. With past experience running his own aquarium store and managing the aquatics department at Walmart, he became a valuable asset to Arcata Pet. |
Jeremy - Floor Manager A North Carolina transplant, Jeremy has been with Arcata Pet since 2003. He earned his degrees in English and History, with a minor in CIS from Humboldt State University in 2000. He currently shares his life with 5 dogs, an African Grey (Django), and a Blue & Gold Macaw (Sundance). In his free time he enjoys mowing his lawn on his riding lawn mower while drinking a beer. |
Nick - Pet Specialist / Internet Our other Humboldt County native, is Arcata Pet’s resident reptile and arachnid guy. He splits his work time between the Internet side of the business and serving our local walk in customers. He currently shares his apartment with two not so affectionate Tarantulas |
Sara - Internet / Sales |
Andy - Pet Specialist - Andy attends Humboldt State University, where studying International Relations and Environmental Resource Engineering will probably keep him a student for the rest of his natural born life. He currently has no pets, but has worked many years at the Oregon Zoo caring for everything from Butterflies to Lorikeets. He enjoys discussing politics with birds and is currently trying to convince Neb (see below) that carbon sequestration is at best a short term solution for environmental policy. He hopes to one day realize his childhood dream of becoming a crossbow-wielding dinosaur for the purpose of saving the rainforest. |
Mark - Pet Specialist |
Aaron - Internet / Sales |
Jay - Internet / Sales |
Neb - Official Greeter, He was the last wild caught African Grey that we ever sold. A few years later in 1990, Neb came back to us, as his family was expecting a baby. After a brief stint as one half of a breeder pair, he quickly became a favorite of the employees and our customers. He routinely models new toys for the website and entertains us with his antics and mimicry. A unique thing about Neb is that he has a large number of red/pink feathers on his body. Many years ago African Greys with red feathers like this were labeled as King Jacos. |
Don and Joy - Owners - Don and Joy met while attending Humboldt State Univeristy in the early 70's where they both were going to school. In 1976 they purchased the then-named Arcata Aquarium, having worked for the original owner for a short while. Don has his degree in Politcal Science and Joy has hers in Animal Behavior. Joy is an avid gardener and cat lover but her constant companion is her Golden Retriever, Holly. Don is the brains behind Arcata Pet and www.arcatapet.com. He designed, developed and maintains all aspects of the internet software and hardware. As a past Microsoft MVP and beta tester for Olympus he is more than capable of maintaining our system. Don and Joy retired from "behind the counter" work at Arcata Pet in 2002, but still maintain an interest in our shenanigans. Their personal website can be found at www.arcatapet.net |
